What is HDPE?
High-density polyethylene , sometimes referred to as high-density polyethylene, in English called High density Polyethylene (HDPE), or Polyethylene high-density (PE-HD) is a thermoplastic invented in 1954 by Karl Ziegler of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute (now the Max Planck Institute) and Erhard Holzkamp. In 1963, Ziegler received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the invention of HDPE. In Czechoslovakia, HDPE film was produced under the trade name MIKROTEN since 1976. This name gradually became so familiar that it became synonymous with HDPE film.
The density of HDPE is in the range of 0.93 to 0.97 g/cm 3 , temperature resistant in the range of -50 °C to 110 °C. High-density polyethylene is chemically resistant, odorless and suitable for direct contact with food, non-toxic, recyclable. The films are characteristically rustling, impermeable to water, have minimal permeability to water vapor and odors, and gradually degrade under the influence of UV radiation. HDPE is widely used, for example, for the production of cooking bags, PET bottle caps, baby bottles, water pipes, gas distribution, chemically resistant pipes, car fuel tanks, packaging for cleaning products, insulating cardboard, welded products. It is increasingly used to produce materials serving as a substitute for wood (WPC). The products are marked with a recycling symbol.
