Notice
Ecological laundry or how to make soap slime
Many of you probably remember how our grandparents, and often even our parents, used soap bars for washing. In our grandmothers' time, the famous soap bar with a deer was sold in the form of soap flakes, and later the soap was sold in the form of soap flakes. It will not surprise you that soap bars are experiencing a renaissance again, especially thanks to young mothers who are trying to protect their small children from the aggressiveness of today's washing powders.
Allergies and rashes are a common problem in children, so mothers are increasingly turning to washing with soap. But they often don't know how to do it, or they have doubts about whether washing in this way will destroy an automatic washing machine with lots of electronics and smart functions. In this article, you will learn everything about washing with soap and I assure you that you will not destroy the washing machine in any way.
So what will we need? 1 bar of soap core
Baking soda – Do not use baking soda as it will cause the laundry to turn gray.
10L bucket (with a lid to prevent the washing emulsion from drying out over time)
Water
Soap slime production workflow
Grate the soap bar on a coarse grater into a bucket. The weight of the soap is irrelevant at this point, as we will be working in proportion.
Pour boiling water over the grated soap (I pour 2 1.7 liter kettles one after the other) and mix thoroughly with a wooden spoon. Let the soap dissolve, stirring occasionally. Each soap has a different dissolving time, but half an hour is usually enough.
While the soap is dissolving, prepare the baking soda. Check the weight of the soap and weigh out half the amount of baking soda. Example – if the soap weighs 180 g, weigh out 90 g of baking soda. Then put it in a smaller pot or other container. Once the soap has dissolved, pour hot water over the baking soda, stir until dissolved, and then pour it into the bucket with the soap. Stir and watch as the mixture thickens. While stirring constantly, add more water. This time, the temperature doesn't matter; I prefer cold water so that the bucket doesn't steam. Gradually fill the bucket to the desired amount.
What is the required amount? Each soap has a completely different weight. So if we have a small bar of soap, we can add less water, if we have a large bar of soap, we can add up to 10 liters. But it is better to add more water (I recommend always adding at least 8 liters, because the soap thickens gradually, it only gels the next day and when there is little water, the washing emulsion is much stiffer). If it happens that the soap is too solid, we can "scrape" it a little with a spoon before washing so that it dissolves better during washing. If the soap is thin, it doesn't matter, it is then a liquid washing gel, but we will add a little more of it to the wash.
How to wash in soap?
We dose the soap directly into the drum. For 5 kg of laundry, we use 2 dcl of soap emulsion. It is better to put the soap into an empty drum and then add the laundry, because it is harder to dose into a full drum.
Close the washing machine door, pour ordinary fermented vinegar (1 dcl) into the container where the fabric softener is poured, and turn on the program. Vinegar works as a fabric softener. Soap is strongly alkaline, and if we did not add a substance with a low pH, the laundry would be too hard after drying. Vinegar softens the laundry wonderfully - and you don't have to worry, the laundry does not smell of vinegar at all, vinegar does not cause any stains, on the contrary, the colors are fixed with vinegar (those who have ever dyed or batiked textiles know this). After washing, the laundry smells of soap. With completely natural soaps without perfume, the smell is neutral, you can smell practically nothing.
Washing efficiency
Washing in soap is excellent in this regard. It really washes everything, the colors are still nice thanks to vinegar, white is white. I wash all my jeans in soap, but I always turn them inside out. Vinegar fixes the colors nicely, so black T-shirts remain black and not washed out even after frequent washing.
How to get rid of stains
We have all boys in our family, so stains are a daily occurrence - from grass, from clay, from ketchup, from fruit, etc. For stains, I use bile soap, which can be bought for a few crowns at a DM drugstore. However, I don't make an emulsion out of this soap, but I rub it directly onto the stain. I put the piece of laundry with the stain in the bathtub, spray it with the shower to get it wet. I take the bile soap in my hand and rub the entire stain thoroughly until I see that a thin layer of soap is forming. Then I wrap the piece with the stain inside and let the soap act for a longer time, or I take the laundry and throw it straight into the washing machine (depending on the intensity of the stain).
Gall soap is never washed before washing, the treated item is washed with the rest of the laundry in a soap emulsion, as described above. Gall soap removes the stain during washing. It works perfectly, the colors are not destroyed in any way, no stains are eaten away or anything like that. After washing, nothing is visible at all, as my light blue jeans, accidentally dripping with blood, can testify.
Bleaching
If you need to whiten some laundry, I recommend adding regular baking powder to the soap before washing.
