How to get rid of moths, ants and other pests in spring
In spring, it is not only nature that wakes up, but unfortunately also unwanted visitors in the home. Moths in the wardrobe, ants in the kitchen or tiny insects around food can quickly ruin the feeling of a clean home. The good news is that if you spot the problem early and choose the right solution, it can be handled without unnecessary stress.
1) Which pests appear most often in spring
With the arrival of warmer days, homes more often see not only ants, but also clothes moths, food moths, fruit flies and other small flying insects. Spring is the perfect season for them – more warmth, more humidity, open windows and often more activity in the kitchen or wardrobes after winter.
Clothes moths
You will most often find them in wardrobes, drawers or textile storage boxes. They are attracted to natural materials such as wool, cashmere or fur. The problem often becomes visible only when tiny holes appear in clothing.
Food moths
They thrive especially in pantries and dry food. Flour, rice, pasta, nuts or muesli create an ideal environment for them. As soon as they appear, it is important to act quickly because they can spread very discreetly.
Ants
In spring and summer, they often appear in the kitchen or around windows and doors. They are looking for water and food, so even crumbs, sweet leftovers or open food can attract them.
Other spring insects
Fruit flies, flies or other tiny flying insects can also get into the home. They usually appear around fruit, the rubbish bin or places with higher humidity.
2) How to get rid of moths once they appear at home
With moths, it is important to deal not only with the adult insects but also with the place where they stay. So it is not enough to just close the wardrobe or throw away one pack of food. The key is a careful inspection, sorting and then protecting the space.
Clothes moths: what helps
- check wardrobes, drawers and textile storage boxes,
- wash or air out clothes that have been stored for a long time,
- vacuum corners, shelves and the lower parts of wardrobes thoroughly,
- use moth traps or proven repellent products.
Food moths: what to do immediately
- check flour, rice, pasta, flakes, nuts and other dry supplies,
- throw away infested food without delay,
- wipe shelves and corners of the pantry,
- store new food ideally in airtight containers.

3) Ants in the kitchen: why they come back and what really works
Ants usually do not appear by chance. They are attracted into the home by food, water and easy access. That is why it is important not only to use a suitable product but also to remove the reason why they keep coming back.
- clean up crumbs and food remains as soon as possible,
- do not leave sweet food open,
- take out the rubbish regularly,
- check window sills, cracks and spaces around doors and windows where they may be getting in.
If a regular “ant trail” has already formed, a combination of thorough cleaning and targeted protection works best. Wiping the area once is usually not enough.
For a mild or just beginning problem, thorough cleaning, vinegar, lemon or herbal repellents may help. But if pests keep returning or their presence is more significant, targeted traps, baits or sprays are usually more effective.
4) What to do so pests do not return in spring
The best defence is regular prevention. It does not need to be complicated, but it should be consistent. In spring, it is worth checking the home a bit more than usual and focusing on the places that tend to be the riskiest.
- Wardrobes and textiles: air them out, sort through them and vacuum them from time to time.
- Pantry: check opened packs and move food into containers.
- Kitchen: keep worktops and corners dry and clean.
- Windows and doors: check seals and ventilation points.
- Rubbish and fruit: do not leave them unchecked for too long, especially on warmer days.

5) A spring home without pests starts with small steps
You can get rid of moths, ants and other tiny insects in spring, but what works best is a combination of two things: noticing the problem early and taking a few simple steps right away. Regularly checking wardrobes, the pantry, the kitchen and areas around windows or doors is often more effective than one big intervention later on.
If you give your home a small spring reset and focus on prevention, it will feel cleaner, calmer and above all free from unwanted visitors.
